South Sudan
Millions in South Sudan require urgent food assistance as hunger in the country is likely to reach new heights.
According to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), South Sudan is facing unprecedented levels of food insecurity.
Furthermore, thousands are on the verge of calamity.
“Recent analysis shows that 2.8 million face acute hunger just immediately after the harvest. What that means is that this year we are going to see the lean period start much much earlier and we’re going to see many more people facing acute hunger over time,” Joyce Luma, WFP South Sudan director said.
For the first time in nearly three years, the WFP were able to send food aid to areas that were deemed impassable since fighting broke out.
As WFP tries to avert the foreseen crisis, the magnitude of people facing food insecurity is predicted to rise in the months of April to July.
